Tooth Extraction Viera, FL

When deemed necessary for your long term dental health, Dr. Roppa and Dr. Marshall-Roppa perform tooth extractions in the comfort of their state of the art Viera, FL dentist office. They will discuss the importance of prompt replacement when appropriate to avoid the many problems that tooth extraction can cause for your overall dental health- and appearance. When a tooth is removed, it affects the bone structure of the jaw, often resulting in a shrinkage of the jaw and shifting of remaining teeth.

A tooth extraction may be recommended for:

  • Severely diseased tooth or advanced gum disease
  • Severe damage
  • Failed root canal
  • Crowding of teeth

Removing a tooth no longer has to be something to fear. We understand the psychological stress of knowing a tooth must be removed and will walk you through the entire experience to alleviate your anxiety. The process is generally quick and you will be made comfortable with either a local anesthetic or sedation option.

Tooth Extraction: What To Expect

Once you are completely numbed and feeling comfortable, we will begin the procedure. Initially you will feel a “pressure” feeling and should never feel anything that resembles a pinch, needle, sharpness, or anything close to this. The pressure will never go away and is not painful.

We will start with gently wiggling the tooth back and forth. We will start very slowly to get you used to this feeling. Once we confirm you are OK, we will proceed with more pressure. The tooth will then start to slightly move. Once we see the tooth moving, you are almost finished. To complete the extraction, we embrace the tooth with special instruments and gently lift the tooth our of its socket.

Bone Grafting: What To Expect

If you are not immediately replacing a removed tooth with a dental implant, a subsequent bone graft may be recommended to maintain a functional smile and natural shape of your jaw.

After the extraction and cleaning of the socket area with an antibacterial solution, we will place the graft material inside the socket where the tooth used to be. Next, we place a membrane (band-aid) over the graft to protect it and place sutures over the graft to stabilize it from movement. You will return in one week to remove the sutures and three weeks later to remove the membrane.

Why Extract Wisdom Teeth?

A wisdom tooth is extracted to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future.
Wisdom tooth removal has become a “rite of passage” for young adults and is generally performed in the late teens or early twenties to avoid complications with dental health as they grow in:

  • Crowding of the back teeth and shifting of teeth
  • A wisdom tooth becoming stuck in the jaw (impacted) and never breaking through the gums
  • Red, swollen, and painful gums caused by a flap of skin around a wisdom tooth that has only partially come in
  • Gum disease and tooth decay in the wisdom tooth, which may be harder to clean than other teeth, or in the teeth and jaw in the area of the wisdom tooth

As family dentists, Drs. Roppa and Marshall-Roppa will monitor the development of your child’s wisdom teeth to ensure that they are extracted if necessary and before they affect the rest of the occlusal system.
