Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy is a procedure by which the inner pulp tissue is removed from the tooth roots. The tooth and its roots will remain in the bone. Like a hollow tube, the roots must be filled and sealed with a permanent rubberized material once the pulp tissue is removed. There are many reasons teeth need to undergo root canal therapy. The most common cause tissue death is due to decay extending into or near the pulp tissue, which inevitably the pulp tissue will die and become infected. Other causes of tissue death include trauma to the teeth, large deep fillings or crowns, or intentially rooth canal therapy to retain the future restoration (crown). Some root canal treaated teeth may need retreatment due to recurrent bacterial infection. Some studies say that the average root canal lasts 7 years before a retreatment or extraction is needed.

Procedure

We first ensure that the tooth is adequately numbed. Next we place a "dental dam" over the tooth so that the oral fluid does not seed bacteria back within the tooth we are attempting to disinfect. We will make a small access hole through the top of the tooth. From this point we begin disinfecting and shaping the inside of the tooth root. We use a series of instruments to accomplish the task. Once we have located, enlarged, and disinfected all of the canals, we will take x-rays to verify our completed work. Once verified, we will place and cement the permanent filling material witin the root. Most often, a temporary filling will be placed within the hole and you will return within a week to perform your crown preparation. Most all root canaled treated teeth will need a crown for its protection from biting. Root canals may be perfored in 1 or 2 appointments. The dentist will determine if it will be 1 or 2 appointments at the first appointment. After the appointment, the dental assistant will review your post op instructions and home care instructions. Medication will be given to you if indicated.
