Bone Grafting - Immediately After Tooth Extraction

If a tooth must be extracted, it is important that you completely understand what will happen to your bone tissue and your teeth AFTER the tooth is removed. Within the first 6 months - 1 year, you will loose 40-60% of your bone volume at the extraction site. That is a large amont of bone and it is gone forever. This will negatively change the aestheic appearance for the worse. Addtionally, you should be thinking of replacing the extracted with a dental implant. If you experience 40-60% of bone loss at the extraction site, you may now NOT be a good candidate to receive an implant. To prevent the rapid loss of bone volume, we can place a bone particulate graft into the socket immediately after the tooth is removed. A bone graft is similar to a sandy consistency and is made out of either natural, cadevaer, or synthetic materials. Your body will replace the graft with your own bone in 4-6 months.

Procedure

We start by numbing the tooth and tissue profoundly. After the tooth is extracted, we thoughly clean any remain infection out of the bony socket. We will then rinse with an antibaterial solution and place the graft material inside the socket where the tooth used to be. Next, we place a membrane (bandaid) over the graft to protect it and place sutures over the graft to stabilze it from movement. You will return in one week to remove the sutures and three weeks to remove the membrane. The dental assistant will review your home care and post op instructions and provide you with any medications and antibiotics if indicated by the dentist.
