Could Your Medications Cause Cavities?

At Smile Viera we want our patients to enjoy their optimal oral health through all stages of oral development. At a certain mature age, we tend to see an increase in cavities, and it could be due to your prescription medications. Meds prescribed for allergies, high blood pressure, anxiety and Parkinson’s disease along with over 500 other medications all report dry mouth as a common side effect. And dry mouth can cause an increase in the development of cavities. Biannual dental check-ups at our Viera, FL dentist office can help to prevent the development of tooth decay associated with dry mouth through preventative and restorative dentistry. Dr. Dominic Roppa and Dr. Kara Marshall Roppa offer some tips and tricks on how you can help combat dry mouth at home.

Home Remedies for Dry Mouth

There are a few things you can do to offset the discomfort and side effects of dry mouth. At home remedies may help to stimulate saliva production and could slow the development of tooth decay. Always consult with Dr. Roppa and Dr. Marshall Roppa and your medical doctor before starting any new oral health care routine. And remember, always discuss any medications you may be taking with your dentist.

  • Chew Sugar-Free Gum- Chewing gum may help to stimulate your natural saliva production. ADA approved sugar-free gum or sugar free lozenges can help to keep activate your saliva glands. Chewing sugar-free gum can help deter the development of cavities.
  • Drink A Lot Of Water- Staying hydrated is essential for your overall and oral health. It is important to drink water all day long, even if you do not feel healthy. Never wait until you are thirsty to drink, have a water bottle on hand and drink water throughout your day. Drinking plenty of water can substitute for your saliva. The water can help wash away food debris and neutralize acids. Coffee, alcohol and fruit juices may increase the side effects of dry mouth due to their high acidity. Avoid these beverages and swap them out for a glass of water.
  • Swish, Rinse, Repeat- Most retailers carry over-the-counter oral moisturizes and mouthwashes. These rinses can help to alleviate the dry feeling associated with dry mouth.
